Essie Winter 2010 Swatches

Below: Going Incognito, a medium tone forest green jelly finish creme shade with the slightest hint of blue. The closest shade I have to this is Orly's Enchanted Forest, but the Essie has just a touch of blue in it, which makes it different enough that if you love greens, you'll love this one!

Below: Luxedois also a jelly finish, something I can't ever have enough of! This is a deep eggplant shade that although very dark, doesn't look black on the nail.

Below: Masquerade Belleis yes--another jelly finish! Thisvampywine creme shade was the only one that caused me some problems during the application. The formula on this was a little thin and because I wasn't careful, I ended up with some pooling around the cuticle. Now that I know this, I'll use more caution the next time I use it.

Below:If you're only going to choose one from this collection,Smokin' Hotis my pick. I'm at a loss toaccuratelydescribe this shade--is it a charcoal brown/grey with a hint of mauve? Or is it a mauve with a hint of charcoal brown/grey? As you can see in the photos taken in full sun and shade, I do believe it's both!

Below:A pale mocha brown creme,Hot Cocois a familiar shade, but taupe shades are always welcome in my collection.

Below: Silken Cordadds a pop of color to this collection, and it's definitely not as seasonal as the others. This perfect coral red shade will work well for you throughout the year.

Essiehas done a wonderful job with this collection--a range of fabulous creme shades, including 3 jelly finishes. These colors that work perfectly for the season and beyond. The application on all of them (note the slight problem I had withMasquerade Belle) was very good, and I used 2 coats in the photos. They're highly pigmented and very creamy, and if I had to award a prize for Best Application in A Polish,Silken Cordwould walk away with that honor.Un. Believable.
What do you think about this collection? Let us know if you're planning to pick any of these shades up!

Chanel Les Khakis de Chanel Nail Lacquers

I'm a little late posting these, and I really need to focus on some of the Fall collections that I'm getting behind on.BeforeI know it, I'll be posting them under my discontinued/hard to find label if I don't step up myswatching!Chanel'stribute collection for NY Fashion Week Fashion's Night Out includes three creme shades, all perfect for Fall.

Above & Below: KhakiVert, the most sought after shade of the three, is a dusty green--not quite olive green, not quite mossy green. It's similar to Essie Sew Psyched, but not a dupe in my opinion. Each shade is shown indoors with a flash, and outdoors under cloudy skies with no flash.

Below: KhakiBrun, a brown-toned olive shade, was much more olive than brown, which surprised me because I was expecting it to be more of a brown shade. I actually like this one for what it is though, so I'm not disappointed.

Below: Khaki Roseis a darker taupe shade with the slightest pink tone to it. I'm getting quite a few taupe shades, so this one didn't particularly impress me color-wise,becauseI think there's probably something in my collection that's close. The other two shades seemed more unique to me.

I'm happy with all three of these shades, although as I mentioned, Khaki Rose doesn't seem as different to me as the other two shades. I'll have to check my taupe stash to see just how close it might be to something else. All of these were nearly opaque in one coat (I used 2 coats), and they all have a nice gloss to them. I've always liked Chanel's creme polishes for their formula, although I know some people feel otherwise. But for me, they apply like a dream--not that they're necessarily worth the price, but they are one of the few Chanel products that I can afford!

4 Shades From BB Couture Infamous Lovers & A Code

Overall Beautysent out their newsletter Sunday and it sounds like she's having a little sale! The Saints of Ruin Collection and both the Guys and Gals Infamous Lovers sets are on sale for $50.00. Use codeSummer09to save $3.00 on all orders over $25.00. Kim mentioned that the sale is for 3 days only, so I'm assuming it ends tomorrow. She recently reorganized theBB Couturespolishes into color families, which makes searching very easy now. Sign up for her newsletter if you haven't already (right column of her site).

Above & Below: Romeo是一个乡村红色的粉色奶油阴影with fine silver and lighter pink glitter. The glitter is subtle, but it is noticeable. As always with most BB Coutures, I used 2 coats and had great coverage. The top photo was taken outdoors, while the photo below was taken with an Ott lamp.

Below: Juliet, a medium mauve creme with a hint of silver glitter, is a creme for the most part. The glitter in this one, perhaps due to the lighter shade, is not terribly obvious.

Below: Pocahontasis a trickster because this taupe creme shade with fine silver glitter changes from a medium brown-based taupe (shown below under artificial lighting) to a much greyer-based taupe (second photo) under an Ott lamp. I have cloudy skies today, but outdoors it looked more pink-based, but still a taupe shade.

Below: Adamis naturally my personal favorite of these four shades because it's green! This muddy olive shimmer shade carries a coppery pink haze with it in any lighting, but is more obvious in brighter lighting.

I obviously adore Adam for his green-ness, but Pocahontas is running a close 2nd place for my favorite of these four. Taupe shades are coming at us fast and furious from just about every polish manufacturer, but I'm not complaining. I was intrigued by the different versions of taupe that this one polish produces. The application was very good for me on these and I continue to be amazed not only by the excellent formula of this brand, but also by the colors and finishes that they introduce at a rate faster than my wallet would like!

Old School Week: Maybelline Part II

This post concludesOld School Week, so I hope you've enjoyed seeing some of the older polishes! I should do aMaybellineWeek, because I have at least 30 more of the older Express Finish colors, but we'll save those for another time.

Above & Below: Wild Violetis a fuchsia based violet shimmer that flashes a blue-toned iridescent violet. I wouldn't call it a duo chrome, but it does have a little bit of color-shifting action going on.

Below: TassledTaupeis one of my favorite shades and it was probably ahead of it's time trend-wise when it first came out. This darker taupe creme shade is shown indoors and outdoors, and the delicate gold shimmer is visible in any lighting.

Below: Planet Plutois a shade I prefer over a darker color, and is shown here over Wild Violet using 2 coats. This multi-colored multi-shaped glitter shade appears to be mostly gold in the bottle, but the glitter is holographic and changes color with any movement of your hand. The bar glitter in this is very fine, so it's easy to get an even coating of glitter.

Below: Matte Blueis a bit frosty or pearly, and it's an icy blue with a slight hint of grey. I prefer this with a clear top coat, as shown in the last photo.

我有时会厌倦所有的新抛光,所以它was fun for me to recall some of these older ones. Naturally though, I'm never satisfied because I'm anxious to get back to some of the newer ones tomorrow!

New Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Shades & There's Some Glitters!

I saw 2 new-to-meSally Hansen Complete Salon Finishdisplays at Meijer this morning and picked up some shades that looked interesting to me. There were 2 table top displays and one had 7 shades--2 of each color. This particular display hadCommander in Chicin it, but I didn't recognize the other shades. The only one I picked from that group wasSo Much Fawn, the pale coral on the right in the top row shown below.

The other display was much larger, having 14 shades, again with 2 of each color. I believe this is the Fall Tracy Reese Collection. There were plum cremes, a purple glass flecked type shade, a silver, a couple of shades in the taupe family ranging from dark to light, a deep fuchsia shimmer, red shimmer, and the 5 I picked up below.

Above:Top Row L-R-Fedora(light taupe creme with subtle shimmer,Evening Fog(light greige creme),So Much Fawn(pale coral creme). Bottom Row L-R:Golden Ticket(various shades of gold glitter in a peach tinted clear base),Sequin Scandal(deep olive shimmer with gold and lighter olive glitter),Downtown Rubies(red glitter in a light burgundy tinted clear base).

I had seen promo pictures of the earth tone shades from this line for Fall and while they looked trendy, they also looked familiar. This expanded collection that I hadn't seen or heard of yet adds a wider range of colors and finishes, particularly the three in the bottom row. Have you seen these yet? Sequin Scandal was instant love for me, and I'm curious how Golden Ticket will work by itself and as a layering polish.

China Glaze Channelesque Returns?

I have a comparison for you today of the much coveted and discontinued China GlazeChannelesquevs. China GlazeBelow Deck, one of the shades included in theChina Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Collection. The photo of the color wheel I'd originally posted showed Below Deck looking rather dark, and I took a few photos without a flash and it did look very dark, much like the photo Yen sent over originally. But now that I have the wheel to do an actual comparison, it does indeed look veryChannelesque-y.

Above:The swatch next to the bottle looks every so slightly darker, but I would say it's 99% close to the originalChannelesque.

Below:A look atChannelesqueby itself using 2 coats, outdoors in natural lighting.

Below:Here are a variety of photos comparing the two shades in a range of different lighting.

There you have it! Keep in mind that the very subtle difference could be attributed to a couple of things--I don't know how many coats Yen used on the nail wheel she sent me. I used 2 on myself, so if she used 3, that could make a slight difference. Also, each swatch is painted on a different type of surface, one being plastic, the other being my nail. For all intents and purposes, I'd call them dupes. Now if we could just get some other well-loved discontinued shades re-issued, we'd all be happy!

Reader Request: China Glaze Swing Baby vs. Sally Hansen Shining Moment

Today I'm working on a couple of reader requests I've received recently. First up, is a comparison to a polish I showed you yesterday, Sally Hansen Shining Moment compared with China Glaze Swing Baby.

Above:The certainly seem to be similar based on the bottle appearance.

Below:Upon closer inspection (click to enlarge), you can see the differences. China Glaze Swing Baby is more silver and Sally Hansen Shining Moment is more golden/taupe. The glitter in the China Glaze polish is also more pronounced. Both shades are shown using 3 coats in varying degrees of outdoor lighting.

Below:This is kind of odd to show you the cotton ball comparison after removing them, but I always get a better idea of a polish base coat by examining the product in such a way. As you can see, Shining Moment (left) has a much greater concentration of taupe and less glitter. Swing Baby has a more grey base and quite a bit more glitter.

Thank you to the reader who requested this comparison, and I hope it helps you out! I will also be doing a request from a reader who would like to know if Orly Space Cadet, Milani Dot Com, and Sally Hansen Purple Gala are different enough that she needs them all. I've had quite a few requests asking just how close China Glaze Channelesque is to one of the new shades in the China Glaze Spring 2011 Anchors Away Collection, Below Deck. It is rumored that they are dupes, and from looking at the swatch that Yen from VNS sent me and my bottle of Channelesque, there does seem to be a lot of truth to that rumor.

It's interesting to answer reader requests with photo comparisons, because it allows me to learn more about the differences and similarities between certain polishes that I may not have necessarily thought of or realized. If there's something you'd like to see, feel free to let me know and I'll do my best to check it out.

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Fall 2010 Collection

Here are the 3 shades I picked up fromSally Hansen's Fall LE Insta-Dri Collection, which includes a total of 8 shades. There were some berry and purple cremes and shimmers, and another silver metallic shade, if I remember correctly. These can be found in a tabletop display that also holds some Lip Inflation glosses in similar tones.

Above: Instant Coffeeis a darker taupe shimmer with tiny multi color glitter. There is the slightest hint of bronze in there as well. It has a more metallic look in brighter lighting, and more of a shimmer appearance in lower lighting.

Below: Golden Flash, a pink/peach/gold shimmer with mainly gold glitter also has a metallic look in brighter lighting. In lower lighting, the glitter combined with the base shade gives a soft, textured plush look.

Below: Metallic Momentumis another metallic type finish with silver glitter. This somewhat foil-like shade is a medium silver tone that reminds me in color of the back side of aluminum foil, if that makes sense!

I like these, buy I don't think they're anything that screams "I need thesenow". I'm getting critical lately with all of the newer polishes, probably because it seems like there's a dupe for almost every one of them. Instant Coffee reminds me of another Sally Hansen that I showed you yesterday, Shining Moment. Golden Flash reminds me somewhat of Nox Twilight Debutante, and Metallic Momentum is similar to many other silver metallic shades. That's not to say if you don't already have something similar that you may like them, that's just my perspective. I used 2 coats on these and had no problems with the formula.

The Insta-Dri polishes have the wide tapered brush, much like the Sally Hansen Complete Salon line. These are available for a limited time at retail drug store chains such as Rite-Aid and Walgreens for about $4.50 each.

Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Shining Moment

I spotted a newSally Hansen Diamond Strengthdisplay last week when I picked up the XTreme Wear LE colors, and this is the only one that interested me. I also picked up a few similar toned shades from Sally's Fall Insta-Dri Collection, which I'll have up next. Shining Moment is a darker golden bronze shade that looks more taupe in the bottle. It's filled with tiny multi colored glitter that appealed to me in the bottle a bit more than it does on the nail.

If only it could look as good as the macro shot above! Shining Moment is pretty, but I used three coats and could possibly use one more, so that's not a good thing. I'm undecided as to just how much I like this one--the shade and the glitter are gorgeous in theory, but the end result is the true test and it didn't finish as strong as I would have hoped.
